Calculate the mole fraction of solute and solvent in a solution
About Mole Fraction
What is Mole Fraction?
Mole fraction is a way of expressing the concentration of a component in a mixture. It is defined as the ratio of the number of moles of a particular component to the total number of moles of all components in the mixture.
Formula
The mole fraction of component A (XA) is calculated as:
XA = nA / (nA + nB + …)
Properties
- The sum of all mole fractions in a mixture is always equal to 1.
- Mole fraction is dimensionless (has no units).
- It is temperature-independent, unlike molarity.
- Useful in calculations involving partial pressures and vapor pressures.
Applications
- Raoult’s Law calculations for ideal solutions
- Colligative property calculations
- Gas mixture calculations
- Chemical equilibrium calculations
